Spanish

All K/8 students participate in weekly Spanish vocabulary and cultural lessons.  In addition, TLC often hosts Spanish-speaking visitors to our classrooms. Our students embrace these visitors, who often bring a unique perspective on the Spanish culture and language to our students.

In the K/1 classroom, Spanish is incorporated into morning circle. Through song, movement, and repetition, the students learn the days of the week, colors, numbers, and how to introduce themselves in the Spanish language. Other vocabulary words are introduced as the class and interest progress.

Ms. Niki leads the 2/3, 4/5, and 6/8 students in more formal Spanish lessons twice a week. Students are placed in Spanish I, II, or III, depending upon their experience and knowledge of the language. An emphasis is placed on developing a conversational vocabulary. Students often work in pairs, practicing the pronunciation of vocabulary words, engaging in dialogue, or reading Spanish picture books aloud together. Spanish II and III students learn to conjugate verbs, translate text, and utilize new vocabulary in class discussion.   By the time students are ready to graduate from TLC, they have a firm understanding and appreciation of the Spanish language.
